IMPRESSIONISM and POST-IMPRESSIONISM: LEAVING THE DOOR AJAR

The need to break free from academic traditions led some artists to aggressively challenge the establishment. Édouard Manet wanted to paint pictures about contemporary life and people—in his own way. Claude Monet wanted to paint exactly what he saw—precisely the way he saw it—without doing any preliminary sketching. Other artists, such as Berthe Morisot, Edgar Degas, and Pierre Auguste Renoir were inspired to develop their own approaches. At its heart, Impressionism was a movement primarily focused on capturing the fleeting aspects of color and light. Post-Impressionism—including such brilliant individuals as Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, and Paul Gauguin—both embraced and rejected Impressionism—by concentrating more on structure and content. But together, these movements opened a door that would lead to modernism. Join us to find out why and how!

FINDING THE PAST IN THE PRESENT—AND FUTURE

Though some didn’t care to admit it—Modern artists were very heavily influenced by the masterworks of the past. Early Modern artists strove to break free from the standards that had been set by the Renaissance, which had essentially been set in stone and practiced for the next 400 years. But no one can “unknow” what is already known. This week, we’ll be looking at comparisons between earlier works and individual artists of the Modern the era. Looking at such elements as linearity, saturated color, patterning, whimsy, undefined space, a heavy reliance on primary colors, narrative through imagery--and more—we’ll identify some fascinating and quite unexpected connections between Modern Art and the traditions that preceded it.

MODERN EXPERIMENTS: SYMBOLISM—FUTURISM—and the ASHCAN SCHOOL

During the decades before 1900—and into the twentieth century—Impressionism and Post-Impressionism were largely rejected in favor of other avant-garde groups. The Symbolists believed that art should aim to capture broader absolute truths—spiritual and cultural—which could only be accessed through indirect methods—not visual realities. They painted metaphorically, imbuing particular images or objects with symbolic meanings. In Italy, Futurism developed—art that was a celebration of the machine age. The Futurists glorified war and fascism—largely for shock value—and focused on movement and dynamic forms. In America, pastoral and pretty country scenes—and paintings of elite society—were somewhat scorned. Some artists felt that ‘life’ had migrated to the cities, raising a host of issues that should be addressed by art. The ‘New York Realists’ painted urban scenes of alleys, tenements, slum dwellers, and street kids. Their subject matter (and their palettes) led to their being dubbed the ‘Ashcan School’—a title that stuck! This week, before we move on to the ‘big five’ movements of Modern Art, we’ll explore these equally as fascinating experiments in modernism.

ART OF THE ‘WILD BEASTS’: FAUVISM

This week we’ll explore Fauvism—a style of painting that flourished from 1898 to 1908, and which is widely regarded as the first Modern movement. The Fauves used pure, brilliant color—applied straight from paint tubes in an aggressive, direct manner—to create the sense of an explosion on canvas. The Fauves largely painted from nature, as the Impressionists had done before them, but their works were invested  with a strong, highly expressive reaction to the subjects they painted. Henri Matisse was their leader, and other Fauve artists include Maurice de Vlaminck, Kees van Dongen and André Derain. Join us to find out why this innovative group of painters were called the “wild beasts”!

THE FAR REACHING EFFECTS OF CUBISM

In addition to being the most innovative of Modern Movements, Cubism also was (and remains) the most misunderstood art style. This week we’ll look at other important practitioners of this approach, as well as the outgrowth and influence of Cubism. We’ll also look at some works that have been labeled Cubist, which in fact are not. Some were created by individuals who didn’t exactly understand the goals of Cubism—others have been mislabeled for lack of a better name! All of the art we look at will be amazing. But whether or not they’re all pure works of Cubism is debatable.

ART FROM THE INSIDE OUT: EXPRESSIONISM

Expressionism was (and is) a highly subjective, personal, and spontaneous style of art. The Expressionists didn’t want to depict objective reality. Instead, they chose to represent the subjective emotions and responses that objects and events arouse. Distortion, exaggeration, primitivism, and fantasy  are all qualities of Expressionism, with results that can be vivid, jarring, violent, and dynamic. Join us to discover how (and why) such artists as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee and Gabriele Munter were inspired to follow this path!

THE CUBISM OF BRAQUE AND PICASSO: A NEW WAY OF SEEING

Created principally by the painters Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, between 1907 and 1914, the Cubist style emphasized the flat, two-dimensional surface of the picture plane, rejecting traditional techniques and time-honored theories of art. Cubists were not bound to copying form, texture, color, and space. Instead, they presented a new reality that depicted radically fragmented objects—disassembled and reassembled—whose several  sides could be seen simultaneously. Come and find out where Cubism actually began—and why it’s widely regarded as the most revolutionary movement in the history of art—so far!

 DADA: THE ANTI-ART

Dada was largely a protest movement, brought about by a disgust for bourgeois values,  despair over World War I, and frustration over what art had become. The Dadaists produced anti-aesthetic creations that were designed to defy any intellectual analysis. They often used randomly “found” objects in their work. What came to be known as “readymades” were developed by their leading member, Marcel Duchamp. Max Ernst, Jean Arp, Hannah Hoch, and Man Ray were also Dada practitioners. Find out what did and did not inspire these artists—and where their ideas would eventually lead. You’ll be surprised!

SURREALISM: WHERE FANTASY & REALITY COLLIDE

Surrealism flourished in Europe between World Wars I and II. Although Surrealist works deliberately defied reason—just as Dada art had done—Surrealism was ultimately much more focused on positive expression. Heavily influenced by the psychoanalytic work of Sigmund Freud and Carl Young—these artists developed a number of specific techniques designed to  evoke psychic responses. (You’ll find out what these techniques are in class!) Such Surrealists as Salvador Dali, René Magritte, Marc Chagall and Joan Miró provided an alternative to more theoretical approaches to art (such as Cubism) and reintroduced an emphasis on content back into painting, but with a very modern twist! Join us to experience the marriage of the conscious with the subconscious in art.

OIL STICKS: PURE PIGMENTS----- PURE PAINTING

OIL STICKS: PURE PIGMENTS----- PURE PAINTING
Ages

In this series of workshops, you’ll create a painting on canvas using oil sticks. These are traditional oil pigments that have simply been processed into stick form. You can use them like crayons, you can thin them, you can dip into them, as you would any other painting palette, or you can combine all of these techniques. All of the oil stick painting techniques are executed right on your canvas—from thick “impasto” applications to delicate washes. This class will teach you all of the options. You’ll find that it’s a thoroughly enjoyable way to paint!
