Pelham Art Center is pleased to announce Siobhan McBride as the winner of the seventh Alexander Rutsch Award and Solo Exhibition for Painting.

The jury selected McBride from over 650 applicants and eight other finalists from across the country. As the winner, she receives a $5,000 cash prize and solo exhibition at Pelham Art Center, May 3 – June 29, 2013.

Currently residing in Miami, FL, McBride’s previous awards include residencies at Roswell Museum and Art Center, Yaddo, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's Workspace program, Vermont Studio Center, and Jentel. She received her MFA in Painting from the University of Pennsylvania in 2005. About her work, she writes:

I have come to think of my paintings as views of a place where magic reveals itself differently than it does in this world. The scenes are tense with anticipation or blushing in the aftermath of an unseen event. Paintings combine disparate yet familiar fragments into spaces that are still, anxious, and temperamental. They are descriptions of awkward experiences, passages from books and film fragments, things caught in the corner of my eye, and an attempt to conjure slippery memories. They are, simultaneously, diagrams for understanding events from the past, and puzzles to decode experiences not yet had. I hope the work is strange and suspenseful like the excitement of exploring a new place, and the thrill of knowing you are drifting back into a frightening dream.

McBride is the seventh winner of the biannual Rutsch Award. She joins the company of previous winners Frank Trankina (2001), Mitchell Marco (2003), Dorothy Robinson (2005), Liang Gao (2007), Tracy Miller (2009), and Nina Rizzo (2011).

About the Rutsch Award
Pelham Art Center is proud to sponsor the competition and award to honor the memory and artistic achievement of Alexander Rutsch (1916–1997), an artist who actively supported Pelham Art Center for more than 25 years. After his death, friends and supporters of Alexander Rutsch and his family established a generous and significant fund to support a bi-annual, open, juried competition in painting.

The Alexander Rutsch Award and Solo Exhibition program continues Rutsch’s belief that art, like a “stone in the water sending ripples throughout the universe,” transcends all of our humanity. His extraordinary work, rich in the celebration of life and our shared human experiences, is included in public and private collections throughout the U.S. and Europe.
