    Paint:

    We will use acrylic gouache for this class. It’s a matte, opaque acrylic paint.
    Brands: Holbein and Turner

    You can either buy paint sets OR buy individual tubes
    Option 1: Paint sets Holbein has a basic color set that has good colors for the work we will do: Holbein Acrylic Gouache 12ml Set of 12 (@ $35 at Jerry’s) Turner Acryl Gouache Paint Set of 12, 20ml Colors ($32.59 at Jerry’s) (Get the one that has these colors: White, Jet Black, Permanent Lemon, Permanent Yellow Deep, Permanent Scarlet, Permanent Red, Burnt Sienna, Permanent Green Light, Permanent Green Middle, Sky Blue, Cobalt Blue (Hue), Violet.)
    Option 2: Individual tubes: (Turner is much cheaper than Holbein) 40ml tubes @$7 or 20ml– @ $4 at Jerry’s Color list if buying individual tubes. Note that there are 2 versions of each of the primary colors plus green. Please get both colors. Sometimes, more than one color is listed, so you can choose which to get. It’s okay if a color lists “hue” after the name.
    Reds: 1. Cadmium Red Light or Venetian Red 2. Carmine,
    Alizarin Crimson or Permanent Red
    Blues: 1. Ultramarine Blue 1.     2. Cerulean Blue or Sky Blue
    Yellows: Yellows:

    1. Cadmium Yellow Light or
    Cadmium Yellow Lemon

    Cadmium Yellow Deep, or
    Permanent Yellow Deep
    Greens: 1. Viridian 2. Sap Green, or Permanent Green Light
    Also get: Large tube of white: Titanium White or Mixing White (turner) 40ml

    Ivory Black (20ml ok)
    Optional: Deep Purple

    Brushes

    watercolor grade

    I use synthetic sable or squirrel. At Jerry’s, the brands I use are Mimik synthetic sable (Kolinsky) or squirrel (creative mark), or Beste Taklon (creative mark). Other brands are fine as long as these are good water color brushes.
    Flats (might also be called a wash/glaze brush): These sizes, one of each: 1”, ½”, ¼” Or 12, 8, 4, 2
    Rounds:

    Should be able to hold a lot of paint and come to a fine point

    		 These sizes, one of each: 12, 6, 4, 2

     

    Paper Block of 140 lb 9×12 watercolor paper
    Palette knife 2’’ trowel is good, but if you already have a palette knife, just use what you have
    Palette A palette pad, or any large flat piece of white plastic is good

    Masterson Sta-wet brand can seal and paint will mostly stay wet

    You have to also purchase the paper liners and the sponge that go under them.

Color is one of the most expressive and evocative tools an artist can use. In painting, color creates light and atmosphere, but also communicates emotions. In this class, explore the basic essentials of color; identity, value, saturation, and how these properties are used to create a sense of space and of emotional tenor. We will do some basic color mixing exercises and apply them to observational situations. We will also work from photographic resources to explore and interpret color to create a sense of light and feeling.
