This class is an introduction to a classical approach to painting a portrait of a live model in a sustained pose. Foundational techniques will inspire and help students move their visual language forward. Through a step-by-step process, starting with the Underpainting to Color Underpainting to Final Layer, students will learn about composition, light and shadow, proportion, anatomy and color mixing.

Underpainting Layer – Composition and the separation of light and dark

Color Underpainting – Gradation of value to create a three dimensional form

Final Layer – Application of paint through techniques such as glaze and scumble

This class is open to beginner, intermediate and advanced students.  If you have any questions about the workshop or materials, please feel free to contact the instructor at

The model will not be wearing a mask during the workshop.
