I Find Beauty in Many Different Things
September 22, 2022
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Join us for a Lecture & Discussion in the gallery with Steven Flanders
on his book “I Find Beauty in Many Different Things,” about the work of architect Cass Gilbert
Steven Flanders sparked a world-wide rediscovery of the work of Cass Gilbert a couple of decades ago. Described in a front-page New York Times piece as “the most important architect working in America,” in 1928, Gilbert fell into instant oblivion as tastes changed and the International Style took over, sparked largely by MOMA. Gilbert was all but forgotten from about 1940 until nearly the turn of the century. There were no books and few other writings about him until Christen and Flanders, “Cass Gilbert, Life and Work: Architect of the Public Domain,” appeared. Now there are a huge number and variety of studies, an active Cass Gilbert Society, and Gilbert is recognized again as an important American architect.
Only an amateur in this field, Steve Flanders was Circuit Executive for the federal courts in these parts, 1980-1997, and an international consultant on judicial matters since then. He is also a sometime professional cellist.
The gallery will be open for visitors at 6:00pm and the lecture will begin at 6:30pm.
