Artisan Boutique & Collectibles
November 22, 2019 - January 4, 2020
Pelham Art Center presents its annual exhibition and sale of handmade art items.
Collectibles at the Pelham Art Center includes the work of 10 artists selected by Executive Director Charlotte Mouquin. All of the works in this exhibition are priced under $2,500 and created by mid-career and emerging artists. This annual exhibition is the perfect collecting opportunity to take home affordable artworks. A public opening reception will take place Friday, November 22nd from 6-8pm in conjunction with the Artisan Boutique which highlights artist makers.
Artists exhibiting in Collectibles include: Laurence Belotti, Capucine Bourcart, Alvin Clayton, Bob Clyatt, Mayuko Fujino, Maizianne, RC Hagans, Eileen Karakashian, Doug Newton and Alexis Trice.
Laurence Belotti uses photography as a vehicle to explore the way individuals relate to iconic architecture, both organic and industrial, within urban landscapes. This is an opportunity to bring home a piece of history at an affordable price point. Capucine Bourcart utilizes photography, photo-collage, painting and sewing to build multifaceted pieces that expand narrative possibilities through images. Local artist, model, and restaurateur Alvin Clayton’s works in Collectibles include his paintings of entertainer/activist Josephine Baker. Clayton’s vivid, Matisse-inspired palette transports viewers to the emotional landscape of his Caribbean upbringing. In the entrance gallery, Bob Clyatt’s installation Field Notes welcomes viewers with colorful, suspended hands that are inspired by world unity. Mayuko Fujino creates dual-layered papercut and collage art to replicate structures of dreams. Local artist Maizianne captures an emotional perception of beauty and personality in her contemporary mixed-media portraiture. RC Hagans’ work is equal parts fine/folk/street art, drawing imagery from religion, pop culture, punk rock, and conspiracy theories. Eileen Karakashian explores abstraction through layers of familiar forms, leading her viewers to discover their own their own poetic narratives in her work. Drawing inspiration from light, Doug Newton creates colorful, well-rendered oil paintings of ordinary materials like foil, plastic, and paper to tell stories of the way we perceive the world around us. Alexis Trice asks her viewers to confront their fantasy of nature through the animal subjects in her paintings, highlighting feelings of isolation and fear that are not unfamiliar to humans too.
