Pelham Art Center presents Careers in the Arts: Laurenn McCubbin

By PAC interns Sydney Paulose and Octavia Liku

Join us on February 7th for our first Career in the Arts presentation of the year!

February 7th, 2024 6:00 PM, Laurenn McCubbin will be joining us over Zoom to discuss her career in illustration and installation art. Currently, McCubbin is the Associate Professor and Chair of Comics & Narrative Practice at the Columbus College of Art & Design. Additionally, she works as a freelance comic editor. McCubbin has an impressive body of work; she has drawn comics and graphic novels for McSweeneys, Marvel Comics, Vertigo, Last Gasp, and Dark Horse. Also, McCubbin was the Art Director for Image Comics, and the co-creator of the graphic novel RENT GIRL (with writer Michelle Tea). She graduated from Duke University from the Masters of Fine Art in Documentary and Experimental Art program. For McCubbin, the art of storytelling and the importance of immersing the audience in one’s work informs much of her process.

McCubbin specializes in teaching  Comics Practicum, Self Publishing, and Intro to Comics & Narrative Practice. Like many young artists, she felt lost when she first entered the comics industry. “I graduated and felt like, I know how to do the thing, but how do I make money from the thing? How do I get started?”, McCubbin said. As an associate professor, she ensures that students have the experience and confidence they need to be successful in the arts. Come hear her speak on her advice to young artists as they enter into the creative industry.
